Turning Ideas into Action at CSLC 2024

We had a blast at the Canadian Student Leadership Conference (CSLC) this week, leading a workshop that helped young leaders tap into their potential—whether they’re bursting with ideas or feeling nervous about their new roles.

The secret to making great ideas happen? Intrinsic motivation. By finding out which projects they’re genuinely excited to pursue, students created leadership plans for the upcoming year that they’re actually fired up about.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Find Your “Why”: Using the IOI framework, we helped students connect their personal passions with their leadership goals. Whether they showed up brimming with ideas or unsure about their path, everyone left knowing exactly where to focus their energy.

  • 9 Universal Human Needs: We guided students to explore the 9 universal needs (like belonging and freedom) and see how they impact their leadership and school culture. By linking their agenda to the needs they care most about, students set themselves up to lead with purpose and passion. One student noted, ““Knowing that the need for identity and understanding matter most to me helps me prioritize all I want to do for my school.”

  • Meeting Leaders Where They Are: Our approach reached both confident students needing to narrow down their many ideas and those still finding their voice. We gave them the tools to progress, no matter their starting point.

  • Ready for Action: Each student left with a personalized leadership plan, rooted in understanding and meeting both their own needs and that of their peers.

This needs-based approach to leadership makes sure that every student leader—whether super confident or still figuring it out—has the tools to turn ideas into action and truly make a difference.
